The Boy with Five Loaves: A Message for the Under-Resourced
I was thinking about this young boy.
No title.
No recognition.
No platform.
Just lunch.
Five loaves. Two fish.
And I kept asking myself… why would thousands of people gather in a wilderness without food? And yet only one person came prepared?
The Bible says in John 6 that about five thousand men were there, not counting women and children. Jesus was teaching. The atmosphere must have been powerful. The presence of the One who calls Himself the Bread of Life was right there.
And yet… people were hungry.
Isn’t it interesting how you can be in the middle of God’s will and still face lack? Sometimes we think that if God is present, there should be no problems. But in that meeting, there was a problem. Hunger.
And Jesus did something that fascinates me. He did not turn stones into bread. He did not command manna to fall from heaven. He asked a question.
“What do you have?” That question has been ringing in my heart.
What do you have? Because most of us focus on what we don’t have.
Not enough money.
Not enough connections.
Not enough influence.
Not enough strength.
But heaven is not asking you what you lack. Heaven is asking you what you carry.
And then the Scripture says there was a young lad. Just a boy. And he had five loaves and two fish.
Insignificant. Small. Almost embarrassing in the face of thousands. But it was something.
And sometimes that is all God needs. Something.
I imagine that boy standing there. Maybe he did not even think it was a big deal. Maybe his mother just packed lunch like any other day. But what looked ordinary became the seed for a miracle.
Jesus took the little. He blessed it. He broke it. And it multiplied.
Five thousand were fed. And there were twelve baskets left over.
Let me say this gently to you as you step into this week. You may not have it all. You may feel under-resourced. Under-qualified.
Under-prepared.
But do you have something? Because little is in your hands is limited. But little in His hands is limitless.
And here is another thing that touched me.
Thousands showed up empty-handed. Only one showed up with a seed.
Be careful not to live your life empty of seed. Even if you feel small, carry something. Carry faith. Carry skill. Carry discipline. Always be prepared.
And if you are in a season where you do not have the seed, then make sure you are not bankrupt of men. Stay connected to people who carry something. Because sometimes your miracle is not in your pocket, it is in your proximity.
But if you are the one carrying the little, do not try to solve everything by yourself. Imagine if that boy tried to distribute his lunch on his own. Maybe four people would eat. He would go home empty.
The little you have is not meant to be scattered carelessly. It is meant to be surrendered to the supernatural.
There are things in your life that will not multiply by effort alone. They multiply by surrender.
Bring it to Him.
Your idea.
Your talent.
Your business.
Your obedience.
Your broken confidence.
Bring it to Him. Because hunger was not just a crisis that day. It was an opportunity. An opportunity for someone ordinary to become part of something eternal.
And that could be you. This week may present you with a challenge. It may look bigger than your capacity. But do not panic when you see the crowd. Ask yourself one question.
What do I have? And then place it in His hands.
I have learned something in my own life. Where I started did not look like where I am today. I did not have everything. I still don’t. But I made a decision not to despise the little. I made a decision to give God something to work with. And He has been faithful to multiply.
So do not curse your five loaves and two fish.
It may be small. But in the hands of Jesus, it is enough.
This is your week to experience the God of more than enough.
